Why Libertarianism?

Hi all,

I'm currently registered as a Republican but since I gave up religion I have little in common with the Republican party any more.  They have combined religion so much into their platform that they believe they are the party of God, which I can do without.

I've been meaning to change my voter registration, which I will do after the election in November.  I was thinking of just going Independent but decided to check out the Libertarian party platform, which seems to be very close to what I believe in, mainly strong personal freedoms with limited government.  I believe in personal rights up to the point where it infringes upon others' rights, which neither the Republicans or Democrats seem to care about.  Both of those parties appear to want to ban this or that because they think they know what's better for the people than the people do.

So I guess my question is what can the Libertarian party offer?  Unfortunately you never hear about any other candidates for office these days except the Republicrats.  I didn't even know there was a Libertarian candidate for president until researching what the party is all about.

Re: Why Libertarianism?

Hi Tom - thrilled to have you aboard. What can the LP offer? We are the only party that offers solutions that involve less government. We believe in respect for the rule of law (as opposed to a personality cult). We believe in the powe rof the individual and self-determination. That, of course, is the philosophy. From a real politics perspective we are much more active in Kansas than we have been in the past. Our candidates are running active campaigns (you may not hear much in SE Kansas - most of our candidates this year are in NE Kansas, Wichita and Central KS), and are receiving more media attention than ever before. While voters are flocking to call themselves independent we are increasing our registration totals.

We really need good activists to carry this message to other parts of Kansas. Can you and Paul form a group in the Pittsburg area? Having a consistent presence in that area could od wonders for our growth. Please contact me or any other officer to discuss further. Thanks

Patrick Wilbur - Candidate for Kansas State Senate (3rd district)

Re: Why Libertarianism?
I would really love to but right now is not a good time for me, as I'm going to be changing jobs in a couple months and probably moving residences not long after that.  This is why I have waited to change my registration.  But once I get moved I might take you up on that offer.

I don't know how well a Libertarian party branch would go over here since it seems like this is a very "red" area of the state.  People seem to be more concerned about restricting what other people do than they are with thier own freedoms.

Re: Why Libertarianism?
That is why we need you to get active with us - you will be a breath of fresh air to the discussions that always seem to be focused on restrictions rather than on solutions.

I can get to Pittsburgh area fairly easily (I live in Stilwell and you are just down 69 hwy for me) - once you settle in, let us know and we can help you get a local group started. There are more LP'ers in that area than you probably realize just waiting for someone to step up and lead!

It's a great time to be a Libertarian in Kansas!
