"In God We Trust" license plates
I know there's probably not one thing I can do about it, but I'm very unhappy to see the state legislature approve the new Kansas license plates which read "In God We Trust."

First of all, I'm not religious, which should be obvious. However, I believe strongly in the right of people to believe in and worship the god of their choosing, or none whatsoever. I also believe strongly in the separation of church and state, without which we would easily have a theocracy which I'm sure none of us want.

To make state-issued license plates which promote belief in a deity is crossing over the line as far as I'm concerned. I have no problem with people who want to display their faith on their vehicle, but don't use official state documents to do so. In fact, the idea was conceived by a man who wanted a new way to evangelize to other people:  http://www.hdnews.net/p5story/licenseplates080808

Other states have adopted "In God We Trust" license plates as well, and in fact it's costing the state of Indiana $1.5 million:  http://www.blueindiana.net/showDiary.do?diaryId=306

Do we want to pay this much so people can preach to others via a license tag?  If they want to display their faith so badly, there are plenty of places to buy Jesus fish symbols or religious-themed bumper stickers.  Why is it necessary to create a new license plate?  Simple.  Christians want to take over our government, and this is just one way they can tear down the wall of separation little by little.  "We" do not trust in God.  If you do, then fine.  But don't speak for me.

The new license plate design was passed with only 3 votes against, so I know there's not much that can be done about it now.  No legislator is going to want to appear to be against God, so they're not going to repeal this.

Re: "In God We Trust" license plates

Tom - one of our officers, Vice Chair Jason Peck, testified very eloquently in opposition to this bill during the last session. My state rep was one of the three to vote against. You are right - the legislature will not repeal this.

The LP is very diverse. We have activists (working side by side) who are Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Atheist, etc. We all understand that religion or non-religion is a private aspect of people's lives that needs to be protected. Unlike many of our opponents we also understand that people must be protected from religion. The founders understood this - not sure why most Republicans and Democrats do not. Thanks

Patrick

Re: "In God We Trust" license plates
The ignorance shown by most Americans on church-state separation is astounding.  The Republicans are willfully ignorant since they seem to want to establish a Christian theocracy.  Democrats seem unwilling or unable to protect church-state separation.  And the general Christian public seems to believe that freedom of religion means freedom to practice Christianity.  It's amazing to see how many people believe that there is no separation of church and state in the First Amendment, even though it clearly states that there shall be no establishment of any religion.

On another message board I discussed how so many on the right are afraid to vote for Obama, mistakenly believing that he's a Muslim.  If we had proper church-state separation, it would be a non-issue even if he was.  But Christians seem to have been working so hard to tear down the wall that they're afraid that a Muslim president could easily do what Christian presidents have been doing, espeically like what's happened the past eight years.
